So, let me get this straight... It was a problem for Bill Clinton to hook up with Monica Lewinsky, but Tom Delay can get away with being indicted for a crime and it's somehow OK for him to continue as House Majority Leader? OK. Pet peeves real quick... + Women who wear Angel by Therry Mugler at all, let alone as if they've taken a bath in it. + People who either a) stand right outside the elevator when the doors open so that it makes it impossible for you to get off smoothly or b) get ON the elevator before you even have a chance to get off. Like, GIVE ME SOME FUCKIN' ROOM PEOPLE! And, thank you Colin for the most fabulous music suggestion. People, listen to me, "Hopes and Fears" by Keane... buy it, listen to it, live by it. Now... the new issue of Cargo just got to my desk. So, I do believe I've got things to do. Monday, November 15, 2004
It's apparent by this point that I am in complete admiration and adorement of Mark Morford. But, I thought this column was particularly lovely. My favorite passage being... "Kansas City and St. Louis and Iowa City and New Orleans, and Athens, Georgia, Austin, Texas, Durham, North Carolina, Buffalo, New York, and Madison, Wisconsin. All blue. All towns known to be relatively quirky and progressive and safe and kid friendly and beautiful and all-American and replete with big universities and mediocre Thai restaurants and underground music scenes and healthy smatterings of gay culture and lots of gul-dang book-learnin', and every single one of 'em seems to be right in line with the big cities in understanding that Bush is utter poison to anything resembling true juicy spiritual hope or intellectual progress or really exceptional semidrunken sex. " And, what I find even more lovely and amazing is this map. It is essentially a 3-D rendering of how various cities and regions in the United States voted in this past, depressing election. Blue is obviously Democrat and Red is obviously, ew, Republican. Two areas of democratic concentration I want to shout out... 1. God bless you Los Angeles, my current home. So many people find you disenchanting. But, god bless a place that I can go to the beach year-round, drive two hours and snow ski, spend $400 on a pair of sunglasses or shoes and it be not only acceptable, but normal. Thank you for that big, tall blue representation and everything you've given me in the past nearly four years. 2. Austin. Where my heart lives. And where so many of those near and dear to my heart live. Simply one of the hottest, most beautiful, liberal, tree-hugging, rope-sandal-wearin', good-salsa-making, hippy towns in all of the universe. You're not only a place where I was educated academically, but educated to the ways of my life. I miss you so. I'll be there soon. I return now to my glass of Frei Brothers Pinot Noir and the most fabulous rendition of Wichita Lineman, by none other than Kool & The Gang. Good find, Julia. Goodbye, and good luck. |
